23 killed in road accidents every day in outgoing year

An average of more than 23 people died in road accidents every day across the country in the just concluded year 2024, according to a report released by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity today.
Some 9,237 people lost their lives and 13,190 sustained injuries in a total of 6,974 accidents that occurred on roads, railways and waterways across the country last year, according to the report.
Of them, some 8,543 people were killed and 12,608 were injured in 6,359 road accidents across the country last year.
497 railway accidents left 512 people dead and 315 injured. Besides, 118 accidents on waterways caused 182 deaths, 267 injuries and left 155 people missing.
Mojammel Hossain Chowdhury, general secretary of Jatri Kalyan Samity, disclosed these shocking figures at a press conference held at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) on Saturday (January 4).
The annual report was compiled based on media reports, Mojammel said.
