State appeals against HC order to quash 4 cases against Tarique

Tarique Rahman

The state has filed a leave to appeal with the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, challenging the High Court's verdict that quashed proceedings in four extortion cases filed against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

The hearing on the petition will be held on Sunday (January 5).

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Senior Judge Md. Ashfaqul Islam will hear the petition.

In the petition, the state said that the High Court's verdict dismissing the case was not correct and it requires review.

On October 23, a double High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain gave the verdict. The state filed a leave to appeal against this verdict.

The cases were filed at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh and Dhanmondi police stations in 2007.
