The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court’s verdict that quashed proceedings in four extortion cases filed against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Senior Judge Md. Ashfaqul Islam passed the order on Sunday (January 5), dismissing the leave to appeal filed by the state against the HC verdict.
Earlier, the state filed the leave to appeal with the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, challenging the High Court’s verdict that quashed proceedings in four extortion cases filed against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
In the petition, the state said that the High Court’s verdict dismissing the cases was not correct and it requires review.
On October 23, a double High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain gave the verdict, quashing proceedings in four extortion cases filed against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Incidentally, in 2007, various individuals filed these cases against Tarique Rahman at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh and Dhanmondi police stations on charges of extortion. An application was filed in the High Court under Section 561(a) of the Code of Criminal Procedure, questioning the validity of filing the case.
