Court orders freezing of bank accounts of ex-state minister Sharif Ahmed

Former state minister for housing and public works Sharif Ahmed

A Dhaka court has ordered the freezing of three bank accounts belonging to Sharif Ahmed, former Awami League MP of Mymensingh-2 constituency and former state minister for housing and public works.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain (Galib) passed the order on Tuesday (January 7) following a petition filed by Mohammad Nurul Huda, deputy director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

ACC’s court inspector Amir Hossain confirmed the information.

In the petition, charges of abuse of power, embezzlement of government funds, and acquiring substantial illegal wealth through corruption and irregularity have been brought against him.

The ACC in its petition urged the court to freeze these 35 accounts with different banks alleging that the former lawmaker has acquired huge money and properties by using illegal power  and through corruptions in his own name and the family members.

The ACC during its investigation came to know that the account holders may handover, transfer and divert the money deposited to these savings, current and fixed accounts to other accounts. If they can transfer the money it would be very difficult to recover it, the ACC petition added.
