A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former Member of Parliament for Kushtia-1 constituency Sarwar Jahan and his wife Mahmuda Siddika over graft charges.
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order on Thursday (February 20), allowing a plea by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Khorshed Alam.
According to the petition, Sarwar Jahan and Mahmuda Siddika unlawfully amassed wealth through abuse of power and personal gains.
It is alleged that Sarwar misused his authority to accumulate assets worth approximately Tk 1.19 crore, which are inconsistent with his known sources of income.
This is considered a punishable offense under Section 27(1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, and Section 109 of the Penal Code.
Consequently, the ACC filed a case.
During the investigation, evidence suggested that the accused were attempting to transfer their illegally acquired assets and escape the country to evade justice. Therefore, the travel ban should be imposed on them.
