DU student’s hanging body recovered from hostel

Police recovered the hanging body of a student of Dhaka University (DU) from a student hostel on Elephant Road under New Market police station in the capital on Monday night.

The deceased Anika Meherunnesa Sahi, 24, daughter of Firoz Hossain of Notun Hat village in Joypurhat Sadar, was a student of the 2020-21 session of the Department of Disaster Science and Management at the university. She used to live at a dormitory on Elephant Road.

Around 2 am, she was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an unconscious state where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.

New Market Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Biraj Mistry said, “We received information and found her hanging from a ceiling fan. Later, she was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in an unconscious state, where the on-duty doctor declared her dead.”

He further said, “Primarily, it has been learnt that the girl has committed suicide due to a love affair. In the incident, a BUET student has been taken into police custody for interrogation.”

The body has been kept at DMCH morgue for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Legal proceedings are underway in this regard, he said.
