Nayeemul Islam Khan, family members barred from leaving country

A Dhaka court imposed a travel ban on Nayeemul Islam Khan, former press secretary of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, his wife Nasima Khan Monty, daughters Labiba Nayeem Khan, Julika Nayeem Khan and Adiva Nayeem Khan, over graft allegations.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order on Tuesday (February 25), allowing a petition filed by Afroza Haque Khan, Assistant Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The ACC in its plea said Nayeemul Islam Khan is accused of amassing huge illegal wealth and covering the source of that ill-gotten money. The anti-graft body is investigating allegations of making suspicious transactions of depositing Tk 386 crore and withdrawing Tk 379 crore in 163 bank accounts in his and his family members’ names.

“The accused are trying to flee the country and a travel ban should be imposed on them for the sake of proper investigation of the case,” the ACC said.
