A tribunal in Dhaka convicted and sentenced one Maruf Hasan Badhon to death in a case filed over rape and subsequently murder of his girlfriend Asma Akter five and a half years ago.
Judge Muhammad Shamsul Islam of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-5 pronounced the verdict on Thursday (February 27).
After the judgement, the judge sent the sole-convict to the jail with conviction warrant.
According to the case statements, Asma and Badhon were in a relationship and fled their homes in Panchagarh and came to Dhaka on August 18, 2019.
As they failed to manage any hotel room in the capital, they took refuge in an abandoned carriage of Balaka Express in Kamalapur Railway Station.
There, Badhon raped and subsequently strangled Asma to death and went back to Panchagarh.
On August 19, 2019, the railway staff found the body and informed the police. Law enforcers found Asma’s NID card in her vanity bag and later contacted her family. Her uncle filed the case with Kamalapur Railway Police Station.
Police on August 23, 2019, arrested Maruf Hasan Badhon and later filed charge sheet against him. The court today delivered the judgment, after examining 14 witnesses on different hearing dates.
