Appeal hearing against Khaleda Zia’s acquittal order on Monday

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court fixed Monday (March 3) for hearing appeals filed by the state and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging the High Court verdict that acquitted BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia from Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.
A three-member Appellate Division bench, led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, passed the order on Sunday (March 2), allowing a plea filed by the ACC to delay the hearing.
In October 2018, Khaleda Zia was convicted in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case and sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment by a special court during Sheikh Hasina’s regime.
On November 3 last year, the High Court allowed Khaleda to begin preparations for paper books in an appeal against a lower court’s ruling that sentenced her to seven years in prison in the corruption case.
On November 27, the HC acquitted Khaleda in Zia Charitable Trust graft case in which she was sentenced to seven years’ imprisonment by a lower court.
