SC upholds Khaleda`s acquittal

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court verdict acquitting BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and other accused in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

The Appellate Division bench headed by Justice Md Ashraful Islam passed the order on Monday (March 3).

Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Barrister Badruddoza Badal, Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajol and Advocate Aminul Islam moved for Khaleda Zia while additional attorney general Barrister Anik R Haque stood for the state.

Earlier on February 23, the state and the ACC appealed to the Appellate Division against the verdict acquitting Khaleda Zia from a seven-year sentence in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case.

In October 2018, Khaleda Zia was convicted in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment by a special court.
