Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) who was killed by members of the banned organization Chhatra League, has been posthumously awarded the Independence Award 2025, the highest civilian award in Bangladesh.
LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan came up with the announcement in a Facebook post on Monday (March 3).
“Abrar Fahad is a symbol of courage against injustice and a reflection of free thought. His posthumous Swadhinata Padak 2025 is a recognition of his sacrifice. His ideals continue to inspire us in the pursuit of justice. The nation will not forget you, Abrar,” the post read.
On the night of October 7, 2019, Abrar Fahad, a second-year student of BUET, was beaten to death by a group of Chhatra League leaders and activists.
On December 8, 2021, the court sentenced 20 BUET students to death for their involvement in the murder.
