DU declares one-day holiday in honour of Arefin Siddique

Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique
Dhaka University (DU) has announced a one-day holiday on Sunday (16 March) to honour its former Vice-chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, who passed away on Thursday.
He was laid to rest at Azimpur Graveyard in the city on Friday afternoon.
According to a press release issued on Saturday, the university made the decision in accordance with its tradition of respecting former vice-chancellors and esteemed faculty members.
Following established customs, the university has taken steps to inform the community about the time and location of the funeral, with the family's consent.
These include campus announcements, condolence messages, and special prayers at the central mosque.
The press release also noted that the funeral and burial arrangements were made according to the family's wishes, a decision the university administration fully respects.
Professor Arefin Siddique was recently admitted to the ICU of the Neuroscience Unit at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital due to illness.
On 7 March, the day after his admission, DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan visited him at the hospital to inquire about his condition and treatment.
His first Namaz-e-Janaza was held at Al-Aksa Mosque on Green Road. Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan attended the funeral prayer there.
The university administration remained in regular contact with his family, friends, and colleagues throughout his treatment.
