The interim government's Advisory Council is going to hold a special emergency meeting on Monday (March 17).
Sources said that the meeting will be held to approve the draft of the Women and Children Repression Prevention (Amendment) Ordinance. Concerned individuals believe that if this ordinance is approved, the trial time for rape cases could be reduced by half.
The much-talked 'rape' of an eight-year-old child in Magura has sparked nationwide protests, with demands for speedy trial of the rapists. In this context, the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs drafted an amendment to provide for speedy trial of rape accused.
Regarding this issue, Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul recently told journalists that the investigation period for rape cases would be reduced from 30 days to 15 days, while trials must be completed within 90 days.
