The government has filed an appeal challenging the acquittal of all 19 accused, including BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, in the 21 August grenade attack case.
The matter has been placed on the agenda of the Appellate Division for hearing.
The Attorney General’s Office informed reporters about the matter on Wednesday (March 19).
On December 1 last year, the High Court bench of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain acquitted the accused announcing the verdicts of the trial court as “illegal”.
On October 10, 2018, a Dhaka court pronounced the death sentence for 19 mostly BNP activists, including former home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar, and sentenced 19 others, including Tarique Rahman, to life in prison.
On August 21, 2004, during the BNP’s second term in government, a series of gruesome grenade attacks left 300 injured and 24 others dead at the Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
