Tarique Rahman, Babar, 6 others acquitted in bribery case

A court in Dhaka acquitted BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and six others in a case filed for taking Tk21 crore in bribe to save the accused from murder charges.

Dhaka special judge court-3 Justice Md Abu Taher passed the order on Thursday (March 20).

The acquitted individuals are – Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmed Akbar Sobhan alias Shah Alam and his two sons Safayat Sobhan and Sadat Sobhan, Abu Sufian, Kazi Salimul Haque Kamal alias Econo Kamal, and Tarique Rahman's former Personal Assistant Secretary (APS) Mia Nuruddin Apu.

Defense lawyer Alhaj Borhan Uddin confirmed the matter.

Earlier, the ACC filed the case on October 4, 2007. The charge sheet in the case was submitted before the court on April 24, 2008.
