Major Hafiz arrested

Staff Correspondent, DHAKA, Dec 29:  Police arrested BNP Vice-chairman Major (Retd) M Hafizuddin Ahmed immediately after the end of press briefing at National Press Club in the city on Sunday evening.

 

From the press conference, Hafizuddin announced to continue the countrywide blockade programme.

 

Major Hafiz, however, criticised speeches of Syed Ashraful Islam, general secretary of Awami League (AL).

 

In the press breafing, the BNP leader blamed AL General Secretary Syed Ashraf for his (Ashraf) slating of Khaleda Zia’s address. Hafiz said the blockade programme will run until the government’s decision on cancellation of election schedule.

 

The former minister also condemned the attack on journalists on National Press Club premises, attack on Dhaka University teachers and attack on lawyers.  

 

He said the fashion of such attack on professional bodies is unprecedented and militant style.

 

After the end of press conference, when the BNP leader started to leave the press club then police arrested him.
