Jamaat-Shibir men open fire on cops in Rajshahi, 30 hurt

Dhaka, Feb 14 (risingbd24.com)--At least 30 people including five police personnel were injured as Jamaat-Shibir men opened fire and clashed with police in Katakhali area of Rajshahi Thursday morning.

Over one hundred rounds were shot during the first hour of the clash that started around 10:00am, reports our Rajshahi correspondent quoting SM Moniruzzaman, commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police.

The activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir also blasted at least 15 handmade bombs during the clash.

The law enforcers also rounded up several Jamaat-Shibir men during the clash.

The clash erupted when the Jamaat-Shibir activists blocked the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in Shamsadipur area of Katakhali union by burning tyres.

On information, police rushed to the scene and hurled several rounds of teargas canisters to disperse the Jamaat-Shibir men, leading the clash, the police commissioner said.

In retaliation, the party men opened fire on the law enforcers.

SM Abdus Sobhan, officer-in-charge of Motihar Police Station, and Kabil Hossain, a photo journalist of a local daily, sustained injuries during the clash.
