Ex-Chief Justice Latifur Rahman no more

Staff Correspondent: Former chief justice Latifur Rahman, who led the caretaker government in 2001, has died at 81.

He breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Samarita Hospital in the capital on Tuesday morning.

Md Sabbir Faiz, additional registrar of the High Court (Administration and Justice), confirmed the news.

Justice Latifur Rahman had been suffering from pneumonia and old age complications, according to sources.

He was born in Jessore in 1936. He studied in English Literature in Dhaka University and later completed LLB in Law from the same university.

He got the membership at the Dhaka High Court in 1960 to start his profession as lawyer according to his book titled “Tottabadhayak Sarkarer Dingulo O Amar Katha” (The Days of Caretaker Government and My Words).

He took oath as a permanent judge in 1981. He became an Appellate Division judge on January 15, 1990 and became the chief justice on January 1, 2000.

He retired as the chief justice on February 28, 2001. He took oath as the chief of the caretaker government on July 15, 2001 and carried out the duty till October 10, 2001.
