Police-workers clash leaves 30 hurt

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: At least 30 people were injured in a clash between the workers of two RMG factories and police over payment of Eid arrears in Tongi.
The clash happened on Wednesday night.
The injured workers and their relatives said that the authorities of Meherunnesa and Capiriy Apparels Ltd in Tongi BSCIC industrial area did not pay the wages of workers last May. It was a scheduled to pay salary and Eid bonus on Monday. Authorities did not pay salary and bonus on that day.
Factory officials tactically left the place without paying salary and bonus for the workers on Wednesday.
As a result the workers stayed in the streets demanding all arrears. After the evening, police requested the workers to leave the road.
As the workers did not move, the police charged the staff at around 8.00pm. At that time, the workers also threw brickbats at the police. At one stage, the police dispersed the workers using rubber bullets. At least 30 people including the police and workers were injured.
Tongi Government Hospital sources said that 28 people were treated. Of the injured, eight are policemen and the remaining 20 are workers. Six workers were admitted to the hospital.
