LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Engineer Khondkar Mosharraf Hossain administered the oath to the councillors.
Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister urged the newly elected mayor and councillors to render services sincerely and honestly to the people of their locality.
Sheikh Hasina said her government has not only established Rangpur City Corporation, but also declared Rangpur as a division.
The government has been implementing massive programmes to ensure overall development of the region, she said.
Sheikh Hasina said once upon a time the Rangpur Division like the entire northern region of the country was identified as a 'monga hit' area when 'langar khana' was the only shelter center for the poor.
But, the Awami League government after coming to power in 1996 has stamped out the phenomenon through implementing many income generating and social welfare programmes for the people.
