Khaleda asks lawyers to appeal against verdict

Staff Correspondent: BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has asked her lawyers to file appeal petition against the verdict handed down by the Special Court-5 in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

Khaleda's lawyer Mahbub Uddin Khokon told this to the reporters on Thursday noon.

He said, "After announcement of the verdict, BNP Chief Khaleda Zia met her lawyers and asked them to file appeal petition against it."

"We filed a petition to get a certified copy of the verdict. We hope to file the appeal petition on Sunday," he added.

Khokon said, "We came to know that she (Khaleda Zia) was taken to the Nazimuddin road's central jail of the capital. Her domestic help Fatema Begum was also taken there to provide her services necessary."

Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Special Court-5 of Bakshibazar in Dhaka sentenced BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to five years rigorous imprisonment in the case.

The court also fined her Tk 2.10 crore in the case.

Alongside, other four accused including Khaleda'z eldest son Tareque Rahman were sentenced 10 years jail and fined Tk 2.10 crore each.
