Zafar Iqbal being taken to Dhaka

Staff Correspondent, Sylhet: Renowned writer Prof Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, who was stabbed by an unknown miscreant on Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Sust) campus in Sylhet, is being taken to Dhaka for advanced treatment.

He will be taken to the capital by an air ambulance, after the operation started at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital would be completed.

Sadeque Hossain, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the hospital, told this to the reporters around 7:30pm.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh was informed the incident over mobile phone by senior Awami League leaders of Sylhet.

PM then inquired about treatment of Zafar Iqbal and directed them to take him to Dhaka for advanced treatment, according to Asad Uddin Ahmed, general secretary of Sylhet Metropolitan Awami League.

He said, "As per directives of PM, Professor Zafar Iqbal is being taken to Dhaka by an air ambulance of Army."

An unknown miscreant carried out the attack on the renowned writer during a programme of the department of electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) of the university around 5:30pm on Saturday.

Witnesses and students said, "Zafar Iqbal attended a programme of EEE department as a guest. An unknown miscreant attacked on him with a knife and stabbed in a crowd, leaving him injured."

"The youth aged 24-25 suddenly made the attack emerging from behind the Muktamanch," they added.

When contacted, Sust Proctor Prof Zahir Uddin could not be reached on mobile phone.

Meanwhile, additional police have been deployed on the campus to avoid any unwanted situation there, according to Abdul Wahab, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP).

Alongside, security measures have also been tightened around MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, he added.
