Staff Correspondent: A legal notice has been served to State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam for his “baseless” statement that BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman gave up his nationality by handing over his Bangladeshi passport to the UK Home Office and to the editors of Bangla dailies Kaler Kantho and Bangladesh Pratidin for publishing the statement.
Barrister Kaiser Kamal on Monday served the notice on behalf of Tarique Rahman saying that legal action will be taken against Shahriar Alam if he cannot prove the allegation and withdraw his statement.
In the legal notice, Tarique asked the state minister and the editors to offer an unconditional apology to him for making the statement and publishing the report on it.
Legal action will be taken against Shahriar Alam if he does not withdraw his statement within next ten days, the notice mentioned.
The editors of the two Bangla dailies will face the same if they do not withdraw the reports, it said.
Shahriar Alam, at a programme in London yesterday, said Tarique has given up his Bangladeshi citizenship through submitting his passport to the high commissioner in UK.
