Arrested shipping chief engineer gives important info in remand

Staff Correspondent: Chief engineer and surveyor of the Department of Shipping SM Nazmul Huq, who was caught red-handed while taking a bribe of Tk 5 lakh at a restaurant in Dhaka on April 12, has provided important information during interrogation.

ACC's Assistant Director Abdul Wadud, also the investigating officer of the case, on Monday produced Nazmul before a Dhaka court on completion of one-day remand and filed a petition asking the court to keep him confined in jail until the investigation ends.

In the petition, it was stated that the court granted a one-day remand for Nazmul on April 19 and later placed him on remand on April 22. He provided important information about the case during interrogation which is being scrutinized.

Following the petition, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate AHM Toaha passed the order asking the authorities concerned to send him to jail.

Earlier on April 12, a team of Anti-Corruption Commission launched a drive at a restaurant in Segunbagicha of the capital and arrested Nazmul Huq while taking a bribe of Tk 5 lakh.

ACC's Assistant Director Abdul Wadud filed a case with Ramna Model Thana in this regard.

On July 18 last year, the ACC arrested Fakhrul Islam, former chief engineer and surveyor of the same department was caught red-handed with bribe.
