Staff Correspondent: Two-day long E-Commerce Promotional Expo” started at Gulshan in the capital on Friday.
The programme was organized by Platinum Events and presented by Daraz.com.
Kamrul Islam, FCA, Senior Vice President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) said the size of Bangladesh’s e-grocery market is of around US$4-5 million or of about 0.03% of the country’s overall grocery market though the analysts are predicting that Bangladesh’s e-commerce market will surge to US$20 billion by the year 2020 according to the Goldman Sachs.
Secretary General of Association of Mobile Telephone Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) TIM NurulKabir was present as special guest in the programme.
Kamrul Islam also said with more than 85.5 million internet users and about 150 million mobile users, the e-commerce sector has a huge client base here in Bangladesh. E-commerce business in Bangladesh is day by day flourishing, but it needs a platform and for a suitable platform we need adequate digital infrastructure.
Besides, to compete in the international market we need product listings which daraz.com will help to formulate, he informed. Bangladesh’s e-commerce sector is expected to grow 70% in 2017 and the market was of about 1000 crore taka in 2017growing from USD$65-70 million in 2016, he said.
He also cited a statistical data that 80% of the online users use the internet to make online purchase and 50% of the online users use online to purchase products more than once.
Secretary General of Association of Mobile Telephone Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) T.I.M. NurulKabir said that the lifestyle of people has changed a lot because of having wider internet penetration in the country.
About 60 top online shops of Bangladesh from five categories like clothing, shoes, make-up, accessories and home ware items participated and will exhibit their products in this 2-day expo.
