Jahangir Alam wins Gazipur city election

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: Awami League (AL) backed candidate Jahangir Alam was declared winner in the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) elections on Wednesday.

In 416 out of 425 polling stations, Jahangir Alam with ‘boat’ symbol got 400,010 votes while Hasan Uddin Sarkar with election symbol ‘sheaf of paddy’ managed to secure 1,97,611 votes.

Besides, getting 26,381 votes, Islami Andolan Bangladesh backed candidate Nasir Uddin secured third position in the Gazipur city polls.  

The total voters in the city is 11,37,736 and 5,69,935 of them are male and 5,67,801 female. A total of 648,749 votes were cast in 416 centres. Of the votes, 18,638 have been cancelled for various reasons.

A total of seven mayoral candidates fought for the post in Gazipur City Corporation election. The voting at the city corporation with around 1.14 million voters was held from 8:00am to 4:00pm on Tuesday. The voting was suspended in nine polling stations due to several kinds of irregularities.
