48-hour countrywide transport strike from tomorrow

Staff Correspondent: Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation has called for a 48-hour countrywide work abstention demanding amendment to some provisions of the Road Transport Act 2018 including eight-point demands.

A press release, signed by the Federation’s president Wasiuddin Khan and its general secretary Osman Ali, confirmed the matter on Saturday afternoon.

The work abstention will be effective from 6:00 am on October 28 (Sunday), according to the press release.

Road Transport Act 2018 was passed in National Parliament on September 19. The act has provisions   which are both for and against the interest of workers. Apart from that, the law has been enacted without considering road accidents as accidents, rather as criminal offense, the release said.

Under the law, there is a risk of death penalty after being convicted in a road accident case. It is not possible for the workers to perform duties being terrified. That’s why there is no option for us other than movement, the release added.
