Staff Correspondent: Security measures in the capital have been beefed up centering the High Court verdict that extended the jail term of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case to 10 years from five years.

Maruf Hossain Sardar, deputy commissioner of DMP (Ramna division) said the law enforcers are kept alert to avert any untoward situations following the verdict against Khaleda Zia.

Besides, additional police forces were deployed in the High Court area. Strict action will be taken if anyone tries to create anarchy.

Earlier, on Monday, the HC bench fixed today to deliver its verdict on four petitions filed over the lower court’s verdict sentencing BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia and two others in the case. The lawyers of Khaleda Zia petitioned for her acquittal in an appeal, while the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) called for extending her jail term to life term imprisonment. Later, Appellate Division increased the jail term of Khaleda Zia to 10 years.
