No bar for convicts to contest polls if sentence stayed: HC

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) passed an order paving a way for the people convicted and sentenced in a corruption case to participate in elections if their sentence is stayed.

At the same time, the court stayed the six years’ imprisonment awarded to Sabira Sultana, a former Jhikargacha Upazila chairman.

The HC bench of Justice Md Rais Uddin passed the order on Thursday.

Advocate M Aminul Islam, a lawyer for Sabira Sultana, said that there is no legal bar for her to participate in elections as a result of the HC order.

Earlier on July 12, Judge Shahidul Islam of Dhaka Special Court-5 sentenced Sabira Sultana to six years in jail for amassing wealth amounting to Tk 1.78 crore illegally.
