Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) has sentenced nine people to life term imprisonment for killing Malay Bose, Union Parishad chairman of Atghar union of Saltha upazila of Faridpur.
An HC bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice ASM Abdul Mobin passed the order on Thursday after concluding hearing on death references and appeals filed by the convicts.
Senior lawyer Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and lawyer SM Shahjahan moved for the convicts while Deputy attorney general Moniruzzaman Rubel represented the state in court.
After the verdict, Moniruzzaman Rubel said a trial court earlier awarded death sentence to nine people and life term imprisonment to 12 others.
The HC commuted death penalty for five of the nine convicts to life in prison and acquitted four others. The lifers are- Ujjal, Mizanur, Mamun, Moniruzzaman and Belayet.
Of the 12 people who got life sentence by the trial court, the High court upheld life for four and acquitted eight people. The lifers are- Sattar, Akkas, Nazrul and Imran.
On February 7 in 2012, the convicts hacked UP chairman Malay Bose to death over previous enmity. Later victim’s wife Babita Bose filed a murder case with Faridpur Kotwali Thana.
Later, the case was shifted to Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 in Dhaka.
