Convicts can’t contest polls until appeal dissolved: AG

Staff Correspondent: Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam said that those were convicted in trial court cannot contest polls until the appeal is dissolved at the full bench of the Appellate Division.

In reply to a query, AG told this to the reporters at his office in the Supreme Court (SC) on Saturday noon.

The Chamber Judge Court stayed a High Court (HC) order that said a convicted person could take part in polls if his/her conviction and fine were stayed by the HC.

Chamber Justice of the Appellate Division Hasan Faez Siddiqui passed the order on Saturday.

Earlier, in an order, the High Court bench of Justice Md Rais Uddin stayed the conviction and sentence of Sabira Sultana, former chairman of Jhikargachha upazila in Jashore, clearing the way for her to contest the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.

The bench of Justice Md Rais Uddin passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Sabira Sultana, a BNP aspirant for the Jashore-2 constituency, seeking stay on her conviction and six years’ jail sentence in a corruption case.
