Sabira Sultana won’t be able to participate in polls

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division has upheld the Chamber Court order that stayed a High Court (HC) order that said a convicted person could take part in polls if his/her conviction and fine were stayed by the HC.
A seven-member bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Sunday.
Lawyers said Sabira Sultana, former chairman of Jhikargachha upazila in Jashore, now won’t be able to participate in upcoming national election.
Earlier on Saturday, The Chamber Judge Court stayed the High Court (HC) order that said a convicted person could take part in polls if his/her conviction and fine were stayed by the HC.
Chamber Justice of the Appellate Division Hasan Faez Siddiqui passed the order.
In an order, the High Court bench of Justice Md Rais Uddin stayed the conviction and sentence of Sabira Sultana, former chairman of Jhikargachha upazila in Jashore, clearing the way for her to contest the upcoming 11th parliamentary election.
The bench of Justice Md Rais Uddin passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Sabira Sultana, a BNP aspirant for the Jashore-2 constituency, seeking stay on her conviction and six years’ jail sentence in a corruption case.
