‘This election is a ‘bright example’ in history of democracy’

Staff Correspondent: Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said the 11th parliamentary election held on Sunday (December 30) will remain as a ‘bright example’ in the history of the country’s democracy.

“This is a huge event in the history of Bangladesh as the voting to the 11th parliamentary election took place in a very free, fair and peaceful environment under a political government,” he told reporters at the EC Secretariat here on the outcomes of the election around 3:30 am on Monday.

At the same time, he congratulated the ruling Awami League for their landslide victory in the election.

The Commission announced the results of 298 out of 299 seats in the 11th parliamentary election.

The election in Gaibandha-3 constituency was earlier postponed due to the death of a candidate and voting for the seat will be held on January 27. Results of another constituency in Brahmanbaria were not announced as three centres in the constituency were postponed.

According to the results announced by the Election Commission, an alliance led by Hasina’s Awami League won 287 of the 298 seats.

Of the 298 seats announced, AL secured 259 seats, Jatiya Party 20, BNP 5, Gono Forum 2, Bikalpadhara 2, Jasod (Inu) 2, Workers Party 3, Tarikat Federation 1, Jatiya Party (Monju) 1 and Independent got 3.

The balloting began at 8:00am and continued till 4:00pm on Sunday (December 30) amid huge enthusiasm and festivity with 10, 42, 38,677 voters exercising their voting rights to elect 299 members of parliament out of 300.
