Construction of Karnaphuli tunnel to be inaugurated today

Secretariat Correspondent: The construction of much-cherished multi-lane road tunnel under the Karnaphuli River will be inaugurated today.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate the tunnel around 11:00am. The tunnel under Karnaphuli River will be named after Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

A press release issued from road transport and bridge ministry confirmed the matter on Saturday.

Abu Naser, information officer of Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges, said the cost of the tunnel is TK 8.88 thousand crore. The construction work of the project is likely to be completed by 2022.

The length of the 4-lane tunnel will be 3.4 km while the approach road on both sides of the river will be 5.35 kilometer. The tunnel will connect the proposed Asian Highway to Dhaka-Chittagong-Cox's Bazar Highway.
