‘Militants can take advantage of congenial atmosphere’

Staff Correspondent: Monirul Islam, chief of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said on Monday that militants can raise their heads again if they find congenial atmosphere in the country.

Police are working to ensure that no incidents like the Holey Artisan attack carried out on July 1, 2016 can be repeated in the country, he said.

The CTTC chief made the comment while talking to newsmen after paying floral tributes to those killed in the attack, marking three years since the militant attack on Holey Artisan Bakery on road 79, Gulshan in the capital city.

Regarding the current situation of militants in Bangladesh, Monirul said, “We have been able to destroy their organizational structure but there is still a section of people in the country who hold the ideology of militants and strongly believe in extremism and militancy. They can raise their heads again if they find congenial atmosphere in the country.”
