Staff Correspondent: Jatiya Party Chairman and former President Hussain Muhammad Ershad is no more.
He died at 7.45am on Sunday at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in the city, Assistant Director of ISPR Rashedul Alam Khan confirmed this.
HM Ershad was the founder chairman of Jatiya Party. He was elected parliament member from Rangpur-3 constituency in the eleventh parliament. He was the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament before his death.
The 90-year-old former President was suffering from myelodysplastic syndrome or a low level of haemoglobin in his blood including infections in his lungs and kidneys.
He was admitted to the CMH on June 26 and was kept at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His condition later deteriorated and he was kept on oxygen support on June 30. He was put on life support on July 4.
Jatiya Party Presidium Member Alamgir Sikdar Liton said, “Family of Ershad will announce formally about his funeral programme”.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, Ershad’s brother and the party’s acting Chairman GM Quader expressed concerns over the “unchanged condition” of Ershad's health. "His condition remained unchanged which is not a good sign," Quader said.
To mourn his death, HM Ershad left behind wife Rowshan Ershad, two sons Rahgir Al Mahi Shad Ershad and Erik Ershad, a host of relatives and well-wishers.
