Titas’ death: Writ seeks action against joint secy

Staff Correspondent: A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking an action against a joint secretary and Kathalbari Ferry Terminal manager over the death of schoolboy Titas.

The writ has also sought forming a judicial inquiry committee to investigate into the death of Titas Ghosh and a directive to give Tk three crore as compensation to family of Titas.

Advocate Jahir Uddin Limon filed the petition with concerned department of the High Court on Tuesday.

Titas Ghosh died on a ferry which was kept waiting for three hours at Kathalbari terminal for a top government official on Thursday night.

Titas Ghosh, a sixth grader of Kalia Pilot Secondary School in Narail, was injured in a motorbike accident in Narail on Wednesday evening. A day later, the doctors of a Khulna hospital referred him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an emergency operation.

The family was carrying the boy by ambulance to Dhaka and arrived at Kathalbari terminal in Madaripur around 8:00pm on Thursday. A ferry called “Ferry Cumilla” was already at the pontoon but it had its gate closed and was not loading vehicles.

Finally around 10:20pm, the ferry started loading vehicles after the authorities learnt that the high official was close to the terminal. Around 11:00pm, the official arrived and the ferry started moving. Titas died on the ferry after some time, the family said.

The ferry had been waiting for Md Abdus Sabur Mondal, the head of Digital Service and Public Service Innovation Cluster and E-service Implementation Specialist of the Access to Information (a2i) Programme at the Prime Minister’s Office.
