‘Road Transport Act to be made acceptable’

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq said the proposal made to amend the Road Transport Act-2018 is being finalised which is expected to be acceptable to all.

“We want the law to be acceptable by all. We’ll recommend amendment to the law, considering the inconveniences. If Road Transport Council wants then it could be sent for amendment,” he said.

Anisul Huq came up with the information at a meeting of the sub-committee formed on the implementation of Road Transport Act at the secretariat on Wednesday.

“Although the Road Transport Act-2018 was passed by parliament, its enforcement has not been possible due to various demands raised by leaders of transport workers and owners. The law could be amended reviewing the enforcement of such laws in neighbouring countries,” Anisul said.

The Road Transport Bill, 2018 was passed by parliament on September 19, 2018 keeping a provision of maximum five years' imprisonment and Tk 5 lakh fine or both for causing severe injuries or any death of any person due to reckless driving.

Sub-Committee Convener and Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan presided over the meeting while Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujon, Former Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan, former Sate Minister for LGRD Moshiur Rahman Ranga and transport worker leaders were present at the meeting.
