Hearing on writ challenging Tabith’s candidacy today

Hearing is set to be held today on a writ petition filed with the High Court yesterday seeking cancellation of BNP mayoral candidate in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Tabith Awal's candidacy on charge of concealing wealth information in his affidavit.

The hearing on the writ petition will be held at 2:00pm in the HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam.

Former judge of the appellate division of the Supreme Court justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik filed the petition with the High Court.

Earlier on January 23, Mr Shamsuddin served a legal notice to the election commission demanding justice over concealing wealth information in the affidavit filed by Tabith Awal with the returning officer.

Justice Shamsuddin alleged that Tabith Awal has violated the country's election law by hiding his wealth information.

"Tabith Awal is one of the three shareholders of Singapore-based NFM Energy PTE LTD with his two siblings. But he did not mention the information in his affidavit submitted to the returning officer. As a result, he could no longer be a candidate in the Dhaka North City Corporation election," justice Shamsuddin said.

As the election commission failed to take any initiative against the candidate, he filed the writ petition.
