Shahabuddin hospital MD among 3 put on 5-day remand

A Dhaka court has placed the managing director (MD) of Shahabuddin Medical College Hospital (SMCH) and two others on a five-day remand each in a case filed for allegedly using unauthorised Covid-19 test kits and forging Covid-19 test reports.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Asheq Imam passed the order on Tuesday (July 21).

Those placed on remand are MD of the SMCH Faisal Al Islam, assistant director Abul Hasnat and inventory officer Shahriz Kabir.

Earlier in the day, Sub-Inspector (SI) of Gulshan Police Station Moshiur Rahman, also the investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced the three accused before the court with seven-day remand prayer.

Lawyers for the accused filed bail petitions with the court for them seeking cancellation of remand order while the state side opposed the bail.

On July 19, a mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) conducted a drive at the Shahabuddin Medical College Hospital on complaints that the hospital authorities have been deceiving patients in the name of detecting Covid-19 through rapid test kits which are not approved by the government. Later, RAB members detained hospital’s assistant director Abul Hasnat and inventory officer Shahriz Kabir for their alleged non-cooperation during the drive.

On the night of July 20, the elite force filed a case against the three people including MD of the hospital Faisal Al Islam. Following the case, RAB arrested MD of the hospital Faisal Al Islam from a hotel in the capital on that night.
