Rangpur’s Shataranji gains GI status

Shataranji, a traditional handicraft of Rangpur, has been registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bangladesh.
Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks (DPDT), registered the item as a GI product on Thursday (June 17).
On July 11, 2019, Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) put an application seeking the registration of Shataranji. Later, ‘Bangladesh Forms and Publications’ office published 'Shatranji of Rangpur' in GI Journal NO-07 in November 2020.
Following the publication, the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks gave the approval.
Earlier, Bangladesh registered Jamdani as GI product in 2016.
