RU teacher Taher murder: SC upholds death for Mohiuddin, Jahangir

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for Professor of the Geology and Mining Department Dr Mia Mohammad Mohiuddin and caretaker Md Jahangir Alam in Rajshahi University (RU) teacher Dr S Taher Ahmed murder case.

The court has also upheld life term imprisonment for Nazmul Alam and his brother-in-law Abdus Salam.

A six-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order on Tuesday morning (April 5).

Dr S Taher Ahmed, professor of the geology and mining department, was killed on February 1, 2006 at the age of 59, and police recovered his body from a septic tank behind his campus residence on February 3.

On April 21, 2013, the High Court upheld death sentence for Dr Miah Mohiuddin and Taher Ahmed's house caretaker Md Jahangir Alam after finding them guilty of murdering Taher Ahmed.

The HC, however, commuted the death sentence of two others to life term imprisonment. They are Abdus Salam and Nazmul Alam.
