Arav Khan jailed for 10 years in arms case

A Dhaka court has sentenced gold trader Rabiul Islam alias Arav Khan now based in Dubai to jail in 10 years in an arms case.

Arav Khan, who has remained absconding, has been fined Tk 10,000 by the court. In default, he has to serve three months more in jail.

Dhaka Sixth Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Murshid Ahammad delivered the verdict on Tuesday noon.

Earlier on Sunday, the court set May 9 for verdict announcement after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence.

Ten witnesses out of a total 20 were examined in the case.

Arav, a fugitive accused in the murder case of a police inspector, was arrested in Maghbazar on January 28, 2015, with a loaded revolver as he allegedly went there to threaten his father-in-law Sekendar Ali to extort money from him.

Police later filed the case against him with the capital’s Ramna Police Station.

Investigation officer and detective branch (DB) of police sub-inspector Sheikh Hasan Muhammad Mostafa Sarwar on March 1, 2015, filed a formal charge against him. On May 10, 2015, the court framed charges against Arav, but he managed to come out of jail after securing bail on March 14, 2018, in the case.

The court on October 24, 2018, issued an arrest warrant against Arav.
