Dr Yunus found guilty of tax evasion, asked to pay Tk12cr

Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus has been found guilty of tax evasion. The High Court has asked him to pay Tk 12 crore as tax on the money he gifted to his three charitable trusts.

A bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir passed an order on Wednesday.

The court delivered the verdict after dismissing three separate applications filed by Yunus challenging the tax liability imposed on the money gifted by him to the trusts.

Dr Yunus had contested the validity of the NBR's notice, which demanded a tax amount of Tk15 crore on 23 May.

The HC on 23 May had set May 31 to deliver the verdict in three tax reference cases filed by Dr Yunus over NBR's legality to claim taxes of over Tk15 crore on donations.
