The Government of Japan will provide $4.4 million for the protection and assistance of forcible displaced Rohingya population from Myanmar sheltered in Bangladesh.

The contribution of money will be used for the reinforcement of life-saving and life-sustaining services by improving the livelihood of refugees and host communities in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char.

Japan embassy in Dhaka on Wednesday (June 14) said Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Iwama Kiminori and Dom Scalpelli, representative of the World Food Programme (WFP) Bangladesh Office signed a note in this regard.

WFP aid is the only reliable source of food for the nearly 10 lakh Rohingyas living in Bangladesh. This support has decreased this year. As a result, the risk of malnutrition and human trafficking has increased in Rohingya camps. Besides, it is important to replenish the food stock.

Dom Scalpelli, the resident Representative and Country Director of WFP Bangladesh said, “We hope more donors will come forward and put the plight of the Rohingya high on their aid agenda.
