EC Alamgir terms attack on Hero Alam as ‘small wrongdoing’

Election Commissioner Md Alamgir sees the incident of attack on Dhaka-17 constituency by-election independent candidate Ashraful Hossain Alom (Hero Alom) as a ‘small wrongdoing’.

He also commented that this attempt was made at the end of the polling to question the election.

He said this while talking to the reporters about the assessment of the post-election situation at his office in Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital’s Agargaon on Tuesday (July 18).

EC Alamgir said, “We held the election on ballots, it was not stamped which we were more afraid of. As a result, no disturbance or occurrence took place. We have succeeded from that point of view. You knew that yesterday’s elections in other places were fair as like as Dhaka’s by-election. But at the end, who did it (beat Hero Alom), it will come out only through investigation.”

He said that the election was being conducted in very fair and peaceful manners. There was no irregularity anywhere. Voting ends at 4:00 pm. At the very last minute a candidate visited the center, trying to get in with supporters and YouTubers. It is intercepted by the police as he cannot legally do so. Then four or five people including him were allowed to enter the center. As he entered and was returning, some miscreants attacked him.”

The EC said, “This attack is a very despicable and unfortunate. It is by no means desirable. Because we cannot accept that ‘a little bit’ of wrongdoing is done to question the election.”
