US reiterates call for free, fair polls in Bangladesh

The United States has reaffirmed its call for free, fair and peaceful elections in Bangladesh.

US Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) Afreen Akhter reiterated the call during a meeting with Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen at the state guest house Padma on Monday.

Masud Bin Momen also told her that Bangladesh is committed to holding a free and fair election.

The verified page of the US embassy in Dhaka said this in a statement. 

“Pleasure to meet with Foreign Secretary Momen and DG Masud Alam from MoFA,” Afreen Akhter said.

The US direct investment and trade, longstanding development partnership, the Middle East, the recent visit of the independent and non-partisan election survey team, and supporting Rohingya refugees came up for discussion in the meeting.

Afreen Akhter, who arrived in Dhaka early Monday, is scheduled to visit the Rohingya camp tomorrow (Tuesday).
