Awami League (AL) has decided not to hold a rally in the capital on 10 December (Sunday), on the occasion of World Human Rights Day.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader revealed the matter on Tuesday morning (December 5).
He said that the pre-announced program is not taking place at the gate of National Mosque Baitul Mukarram as the Election Commission has not given permission for the planned rally. However, the formalities of the day will be observed at the party office.
Obaidul Quader also said that the next December 10 is Human Rights Day. We had a plan to organize a grand rally on that day at the south gate of Baitul Mukarram. We filed a petition seeking permission at the Election Commission. They did not accept that request. They feared that a showdown would be held in the name of a rally. That’s why we will observe our Human Rights Day ceremony inside. We do not want to go beyond the electoral rules.
