Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has warned that disciplinary action will be taken against those not complying with the party decision in the upcoming upazila parishad elections.
Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, made the warning at a press conference at the Awami League’s Dhanmondi office in the capital on Wednesday (April 24).
The ruling party will take action against candidates who are relatives of ministers and members of parliament and defied the directive of party leader Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by not withdrawing their candidacies from the upcoming upazila parishad elections, he said.
Even though the deadline for withdrawing candidacies, as set by the Election Commission, had passed. There was still room for action as candidates could withdraw their nominations right up until the day before the election, Quader said.
Regarding measures against the lawmakers defying the party’s decision, the minister said: “We have provisions for disciplinary action in our party. Action will be taken on time.”
The first phase of the upazila parishad election is scheduled to be held on May 8 in 148 upazilas across the country.
