Pacemaker implanted in Khaleda Zia’s heart

A ‘pacemaker’ has been installed in the heart of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, said her personal physician Prof AZM Zahid Hossain.

Doctor Zahid confirmed the matter around 7:00am on Sunday (June 23).

He said that madam already had heart problems. There was a heart block too. A stent (ring) was also placed there. After reviewing everything, a pacemaker was implanted in her heart, according to the decision of the medical board.

Dr. A P M Sohrabuzzaman, a cardiologist, said that 'Pacemaker' is an artificial electrical device to keep the heartbeat regular, which generates electrical impulses and sends them to the heart muscle and helps control the heart rate.

Earlier, the BNP chief was taken to Evercare Hospital by ambulance on Friday midnight after she suddenly took ill. She has been kept under close observation by doctors in the Critical Care Unit.

On October 27 last year, Khaleda Zia, who was suffering from liver cirrhosis, underwent a blood vessel surgery. At that time, three specialist doctors from the United States conducted an operation on her blood vessels.
